Google refocusing on products: CFO
ASPEN, Colorado - Google co-founder Larry Page, who took over as CEO in April, is the focus of the Internet giant's product and its "start-up philosophy," its chief financial officer said Wednesday.
Patrick Pichette, speaking at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in this ski resort in Colorado, also said investors should not worry about generating revenue Google's Android mobile operating system or Web browser Chrome.
"With scale, it becomes the tension of how do you keep the philosophy of starting," said Pichette Mountain View, Calif., the company employs over 28,000 people worldwide.
"We do not want to lose our start-up philosophy," he said.
"With the reorg (anise), the realignment that Larry did a few months ago, he just wanted to focus specifically on products," said Pichette.
He said the key message is the page trying to say is that Google is a "very young, we are in startup mode (and) we will invest for the long term."
Page, who founded Google with Sergey Brin in 1998, replaced Eric Schmidt as CEO during the first week of April, ending a structure "triumvirate" of management Pichette said was "slows us down."
Mr. Pichette web browser Google Chrome has attracted 160 million users and 550,000 Android enabled mobile devices every day.
"When we have products that get the user and the resounding success of consumers who are increasingly the hundreds of millions, we do not worry," he said. "The only question is when and how do we monetize.
"Everybody is all nervous about the fact that it has been 36 months since Android launched and you only search (revenue)," he said. "It's critical that I hear.
"The questions asked are so short termish. It's just not the way Google thinks, "he said.
Google earns revenue from research on Android devices, but it "fuels so many other avenues for growth," he said, citing Google Wallet, Google Payments, Google offers and other products.
