Run for right to drink safe water
About 16 million Filipinos have no access to drinking water clean and safe, according to the objectives of last year the Millennium Development Goals Progress Report (MDGs).
If water is the root of life, then once every five Filipinos is deprived of a basic need and a fundamental human right.
But now, thanks to a successful collaboration between government, private sector, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and the Millennium Fund (MDGF) in the Philippines, Filipinos have a chance to do something to change that.
Water flows in the Philippines (REP 11), a series of "fun runs" in the main cities in the Philippines, hopes to raise funds that will provide immediate solutions to those families most in need. It also aims to make people aware of the importance of access to drinking water.
The initial circulation will be in the city of Vigan in Ilocos Sur next month and organizers expect at least 5,000 participants. It will be followed by fun runs in five cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The program is led by Erwin Po Veepo Global Resources, Ani de los Reyes E-ventologists and Roger N.Frias in partnership with the MDGF 1919, a program designed to improve the delivery of water services to communities without water.
The lead agency for the partnership mechanism which aims to accelerate the achievement of the MDGs is the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).
"We believe that providing sustainable access to safe drinking water is not only the responsibility of government. It works in partnership with the private sector through its various policies and advocacy, "said Neda director Roderick Planta, coordinator for the MDGF 1919.
The MDGF 1919 is one of four achievement-finance programs in the country are funded by the Spanish Government and administered by the United Nations.
Such a partnership is PWR, born of the common desire of MDGF 1919 and Veepo Global Inc. to bring water governance and water issues at the forefront of the development agenda, according Planta.
